Cape Town in July: Whale Season, Winter Walks and Coastal Stays

Cape Town in July: Whale Season, Winter Walks and Coastal Stays

July gives Cape Town a different kind of appeal. The beaches are quieter, the views across Table Bay feel sharper, and the southern right whales are back along the coast for the season. The best plans this month do not need to be complicated: a morning walk, a good coffee, a space that is clean, ready and easy to settle into.

This month we are featuring three stays that each suit a different rhythm: a Blouberg apartment built for working from the balcony, a one-bedroom with Table Mountain across the water, and a West Coast house with enough space for a full group to spread out.

For the Working Stay

For The Working Stay

Some mornings, you do not need to go anywhere. The ocean is right outside the window. Make a Nespresso, pull up a chair on the patio, and watch the kite surfers from where you are.

This apartment sleeps four across two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, and there is a separate washer and dryer for longer stays. A Weber braai on the patio, garage parking, and a full inverter for uninterrupted power. Restaurants and shops are a short walk away when you are ready for them.

For the Slower Stay

For The Slower Stay

Made for two. Table Mountain sits across the bay, and from the balcony, so does most of the view worth having. There is a gas braai out there and enough space to sit and eat outside, which tends to be where this one settles people in.

One bedroom, one bathroom, two guests. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, and there is a washer and dryer for longer stays. Fast Wi-Fi, a Smart TV, and garage parking for one car. Load shedding free. Restaurants, coffee shops and the beach are all within easy reach. Please note this unit is accessible by stairs only.

From R3,100 per night, with a three-night minimum stay.

Whale Season is Here

The South African whale season officially runs from June through November, with peak viewing between August and October, so July puts you right at the start of the best stretch. Southern right whales and humpbacks move through the waters along the Cape coast during this window.

For a simple day out, keep an eye on calm-weather days and look towards Hermanus, False Bay, Cape Point or the Atlantic coastline. If you are staying near the water, this is the time of year to keep checking the horizon.

Four Coastal Routes, At Your Own Pace

Bloubergstrand

A long, flat route with Table Mountain across the water. Start early if the wind is low, then stop for coffee close to the beachfront.

Sea Point Promenade

A reliable stretch of fresh air without needing to drive far. Works well before breakfast, after meetings, or just before sunset.

Camps Bay

Shorter and more scenic. The Twelve Apostles behind you, the ocean in front, restaurants close by when you are done.

Big Bay

A quieter choice on the right morning. Wide views, an easy promenade, far enough from the city without being complicated.

For the Group Stay

Two hours from Cape Town, the West Coast moves at a different pace entirely. The Musselcracker sits on Shelley Point Estate with its own private boardwalk to the beach, a heated pool overlooking the ocean, and five en-suite bedrooms across a double-volume house built for ten guests who actually want space between them.

The living area opens directly onto the pool and garden, with the sea right there beyond it. Inside, there is a fully equipped kitchen, a bar area, a dishwasher, a washer and dryer, and 5G fibre Wi-Fi throughout. Paternoster is close by when you are ready to eat out, and the Shell Bay Lighthouse and the estate’s golf course are on your doorstep when you are not.

If you are after a reason to book the weekend, the Mykonos Half Marathon takes place close by in Langebaan on 25 July, with 21.1 km, 10 km and 5 km routes starting from Club Mykonos. A good excuse to make a weekend of it, whether or not you are running.

Please note this home is not suitable for children under 12.

You notice it in the first few minutes: the linen, the clean smell of the space, the Wi-Fi working when you arrive, the access details being clear, the apartment looking like the photos.

That is where a good stay starts. Not with big promises, but with the small things being ready before you get there. It is the same standard across all three homes above, and every other property we manage.

Book Direct For The Best Rate

All three homes are available to book directly through our property pages. Direct bookings mean direct access to our team before, during and after your stay, with no third party in between.
