Cape Town in August: Rugby Weekend, Birthday Freebies and Three Stays Worth Booking

On 29 August, the Springboks host the All Blacks at DHL Stadium, and the Atlantic Seaboard fills up around it. We’re also using this issue to share a few genuinely free things to do around Cape Town during your birthday month, whenever that happens to fall, and there is plenty of reason to book a stay now rather than wait for the last minute.

This month we are featuring three stays that each suit a different kind of trip: a three-bedroom Blouberg apartment built for a family or a full group, a Sea Point base a short drive from the stadium, and a West Coast house with room to properly switch off.

New On The Market: Eden on the Bay, Big Bay

A one-bedroom apartment at Eden on the Bay in Big Bay has just come onto the market for R3,150,000. It has one bathroom, one parking bay, and 79m² of open-plan living leading onto a balcony with ocean views. The building sits right above the Eden on the Bay promenade, close to the beach, restaurants and cafés, the same stretch of coastline several of our own managed properties sit on, which makes it a natural fit for short-term letting if that’s of interest.

For The Beachfront Base

The main bedroom opens straight onto the balcony, and from there it is Robben Island, the Atlantic, and Table Mountain across the water. It is the kind of view that does most of the work before you have even made coffee.

Three bedrooms and two bathrooms sleep six, with the main room en-suite. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, washer and dryer, and a pod coffee machine. Uncapped Wi-Fi, DSTV and backup power are included, so loadshedding will not interrupt the stay, and the patio has a gas braai for evenings in. It is a 30-metre walk to the beach and promenade, with restaurants and coffee shops close by.

For The City Weekend

Sea Point Promenade is a short walk away, and this August that matters more than usual. DHL Stadium is a short drive from here, so it is a genuinely convenient base for the Springboks vs All Blacks test on 29 August. A few weeks later, the OUTsurance Gun Run starts and finishes just up the road in Mouille Point on 12 and 13 September, if you would rather watch the runners than the rugby.

This three-bedroom apartment sleeps six, with every bedroom en-suite and flexible king or twin beds. The open-plan living area leads onto a balcony with Atlantic Ocean views, and a rooftop pool and sun deck sit above it all. The kitchen comes with a Nespresso machine, Smeg oven, dishwasher, washer and dryer. There is undercover parking for two cars, 24-hour security, and daily housekeeping on weekdays.

For The West Coast Reset

An hour and forty-five minutes from Cape Town, the pace changes properly. This beachfront house looks out over the ocean from almost every room, with a splash pool and built-in braai for the parts of the day spent outside.

Four en-suite bedrooms with queen beds sleep eight. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a PJ lounge with DSTV and Netflix for evenings in. Shelley Point Golf Estate and the beach are both close by, along with easy walks and water sports for anyone who wants to get out.

Cape Town’s Birthday Freebies

These are not an August-only thing, they are available whenever your birthday falls during the year, but this felt like a good month to mention them.

If you hold a South African ID, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway offers a free return ticket, valid any day during your birthday month. Two Oceans Aquarium offers free entry for the same period, and Robben Island Museum has a free tour ticket on the day itself, though it is worth arriving early as spots are limited. The Cape Wheel at the V&A Waterfront also offers a free ride on your actual birthday.

Closing
